Setareh Shabazi: Why Not Bazar
Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum
Spring 2008
The first US solo exhibition and commission by this Iranian-born, Berlin-based artist. ‘Why Not Bazar’ examines intersections and collisions between different cultural locations and their traditions. Shahbazi culls from images found in her daily life and surroundings. Pictures from different sources such as magazines, newspapers, postcards, billboards, and advertisements as well as images that Shahbazi takes on location both in the Middle East and in Western Europe, create the basis for her ink-jet prints, installations placards, and theatrical tableaus. Using a highly colored palette as a kind of lens, Shahbazi’s iconic images act as filters for what could be a charged psychological state, a collective memory, a mediated news item, or just a fleeting banal scene —though her treatment of these transitions are subtle and elusive.
